Word Families

Word families are groups of words that have common features or patterns.  This resource is broken into four levels for progressing through word families with your young learners. Also included is a list of fun activities to practice word family words.

Level One :  3 letters - short vowel words that follow the C-V-C pattern. (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant)

Level Two :  3+ letters - short vowel words that include consonant blends.  Consonant blends are when two or more consonants are blended together and each sound can be heard. (Examples:  bl, br, cl, fl, tr, sp…

Level Three:  3+ letters - short vowel words that include consonant digraphs.  Digraphs are voiceless blends of two consonants.  (Examples:  sh, ch, th, wh)

Level Four:  3+ letters - long vowel words.
